Description

Description/Scope: Polyethylne Membrane Devices are integrated samplers that measure polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in water. PAHs occur in oil and bitumen and are byproducts of fuel burning, they are of concern because some compounds have been identified as carcinogenic and mutagenic. These differ from semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs). At low concentrations, the triolein (fat) in SPMDs can contaminate samples. Polyethylne Membrane devices (PMDs) are integrated samplers that measure polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in water. These PMDs will be deployed alongside water quality sondes to answer contaminants questions broadly on river in the NWT, and specifically on the Slave and Mackenzie River.
