The objective of the study is to examine the economics of community sawmill
operations in the NWT to determine the necessary conditions for profitable
operations. Where appropriate the study will examine in detail the Jean Marie
River and Fort Resolution sawmills and their local environments. The following
topics will be evaluated:

The study will research and document several
successful small sawmills in Alberta and/or other regions of Canada including a
review of the products produced, technology used, harvesting methods, manning
levels and operating parameters. This review should provide some guidance to
NWT producers.
